Our research addresses a variety of topics ranging from infant developmental outcomes among high-risk infants to emerging adult mental health outcomes related to parent-child relationship qualities. Overall, we are interested in how parenting practices, family functioning, and relationship qualities affect mental health outcomes in children, adolescents, and emerging adults. The UNM Clinical Psychology Department endorses a Clinical Science training model, thus we aim to integrate psychological science, theory, and clinical knowledge for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically based distress and to promote subjective well-being and personal development. Our current work focuses on an attachment theory-based investigation of college student well-being as a function of adult attachment security; and mother-daughter relationship qualities that confer protection against body dissatisfaction and disordered eating among preadolescent girls. Our lab is currently designing two research projects: an investigation of the role of culture in moderating the relationship between parenting practices and child developmental outcomes; and a mixed methods study of the developmental progression of body image constructs among preschool children. The overall aim of these research projects is to make significant contributions to the advancement of psychological clinical science and to the application of science to improving the human condition.
